I’m Althea
YOGA THERAPIST | TEACHER | MENTOR
While traveling the path of life have you sometimes felt sparks of connection?
For me, yoga ignites this connection with myself, the Divine, my family, my community, and the natural world.
My “why” is to be of service to others.
Yoga is connection, the foundation of all the wonder to be experienced in life.
Being of service through yoga enriches my devotion to my community, family and friends.
I experience connection when in nature, while teaching, being in conversation, playing the piano, and sitting quietly with melodies and harmonies.
Placing my hand on my heart reconnects me with all of the grace available to us when we pause, breathe, and receive. You will see this gesture in class and I invite you to try it.
Thank you for allowing me to support your journey of self-healing through yoga, on and off the mat.
I became a yoga teacher later in life.
To AltheaYoga, I bring my life experiences, as well as over three decades of clinical and teaching experience from my first career as a registered nurse, and my background as a health educator, mentor, consultant and Yoga Therapist.
My passion for Yoga Therapy, specializing in mental and emotional health, arises from close study with my beloved teacher, Kim Orr, founder and teacher of Contemplative Practice Yoga®. Through Kim’s masterful teachings in yoga philosophy, the subtle body, and yoga’s therapeutic tools, I learn and teach the depth of yoga’s healing gifts including and beyond the asanas (yoga postures).
I have been studying and teaching yoga for more than 35 years, with over 3500 hours of formal training and study, working in myriad settings from studios to hospitals. I have advanced certifications as a Contemplative Practice Yoga® teacher, Contemplative Practice Yoga® Therapist* and Contemplative Practice Yoga® Nidra teacher.
I offer this experience and passion to you.
AltheaYoga links my home studio with your home practice space to form a bridge of connection.
*This advanced training and certification as a Contemplative Practice Yoga® Therapist and C-IAYT is specific to Yoga Therapy and is derived from my advanced studies in Yoga Therapy and my education and experience in health care settings as a Registered Nurse. It is not derived from my status as an E-RYT 500 with Yoga Alliance.
My teaching style and approach to the asana practice reflect my belief that less is more.
In my classes, I guide your form and alignment carefully with an intelligent pattern of expansion and contraction in poses. We weave the breath into gentle movement and stillness. When your body and breath are in sync, your mind is at ease. This approach of less is more develops interoception, the perception and understanding of your internal sensations.
In our live-stream classes, you can check in with me. If you choose to leave your camera on, I interact with you to offer modifications for your body’s needs.
Having seen how a sequence moves through students while in person, I create personalized on-demand videos. These range in length from a few minutes to a 75-minute recorded live-stream class. You have choices to suit your schedule and your needs.
All our practices enhance strength, coordination, and resilience while deepening somatic awareness. This allows for the release of long-held tension. Together, we uncover new ways of moving, refine posture, enhance breathing, and cultivate greater self-awareness.
Learn to integrate the tranquility of your practice into your interactions with the outside world.
Your life is your practice.
